YWCA Rehabilitation Center for Handicapped Children
Available for: Internship | Voluntary work
YWCA (Young Women Christian Association) rehabilitation center for handicapped children is situated right in the center of Moshi town. Center has started its activity about 10 years ago. Kids who are disabled in different ways visit the center every day. Some of the kids live in the center all the time or short periods and some come there daily.
The kids come to the center to get therapy and to study. There are approximately 6 to 8 kids coming every day. In addition to that there are about 8 kids living in the center. They have also therapy weeks for the families in the center. That means that the disabled child arrives to the center for one week with his/ hers parent. During the week they live in the center, the child gets diagnosed and the workers in the center make an individual therapy program to the child which is then taught to the parent.
The activities start in the center around 8 o’ clock in the morning by therapy. The therapy continues until 11 and after that the kids will have lunch break. Therapy continues again after 2pm. During the break the volunteers and interns can make a timetable and work with the children one by one.
In the center there are 3 occupational therapists working permanently. They don’t have their own physiotherapist or speech therapist but they get consultation when it is needed. The workers of the center also go to the YWCAs rural offices regularly. In these outreach offices they evaluate and help children and their families who live far away from town.
The center is struggling with finance and support. Many of the equipments and assistive devices that they are using are in poor condition, handmade or broken. For that reason the center is welcoming all kind of donations.
This center is an excellent voluntary work or internship placement for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists or therapist student
The center follows the government schools on its holidays. The center is closed the whole December and most of June and July.
