Tarangire
SPECIAL FEATURES OF TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK:
Tarangire National Park (2850 km² or 1096 miles²) was founded in 1970. In this park you can see common African savanna sceneries, thousand years old gigantic baobab trees and river valleys. The park is based around a river which doesn’t dry even on dry season. In Tarangire you can see almost all the main wild animals living in east Africa and especially the Tanzanias biggest elephant herds give you a good reason for pay this park a visit. Tarangire is also called the home of elephants.
Besides elephants you can see all the five big predators in Tarangire. These are lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and African wilddog. Also foxes, jackals, serval cats and several species of mongooses and many warthogs can be seen. Olive baboons and vervet monkeys are common everywhere in the park. For bird lovers there have been found more than 550 different species of birds.
During the dry season from August to October the wildebeests, zebras, buffalos, impalas, gazelles, hartebeests, elands and herds of up to 300 elephants gather around the dry river looking for underground streams. During this time Tarangire is one of the top places to be in Tanzania. But since the river never dries up completely these animals live in the area year around what makes the park worth of visiting anytime of the year.
The most characteristic features for Tarangire are its open, flat grass savannah and huge herds of elephants and impalas everywhere. Another positive feature for the park is its smaller amount of tourists. Tarangire is not as crowded as the most famous parks in Tanzania and it is possible to do a full day game drive there without seeing other safari cars. There is also versatile road network in the park.
