Living in Moshi
Moshi is a town just at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain Mount Kilimanjaro. Population in Moshi is currently about 200 000. People in the city and around it belongs mainly in Maasai and Chagga tribes. Moshi is located approximately 50 kilometers from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Moshi is also considered the cleanest town in East Africa.
Moshi area produces a lot of corn and beans. Harvesting is once in the year after rainy season. In the higher slopes of the mountain grows bananas and coffee. Moshi town has a relatively stable climate, which is highly controlled by the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro. This, as well as the altitude of the town, about 1 kilometer from sea level, keeps the temperatures lower than at the coastal area.
During your volunteering/internship or teacher exchange period you will stay comfortably and safely in Tanzania Volunteers’ volunteer house with other interns and volunteers.
When you have free time, there are plenty of things to do in Moshi and around. After work and during weekends you can enjoy sports, african culture, live music and nightlife. Moshi has also a large number of restaurants. If you like sports you can swim, go to the gym, play tennis, squash or even golf. If you are interested in culture, you can learn Masai – jewelry making, batik dying or African dance and drumming. Moshi has also a large number of restaurants, which offer delicacies for all tastes. On weekends you may choose to spend time with either listening to live music or go to nightclubs in Moshi.
During your stay you can participate on weekend trips organized by us for example to Hot Springs, Marangu-waterfalls, safaris or Maasai-village. For longer trips for example beach holiday in Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro climbing you have to take some time after your volunteering/ internship/ teacher exchange period is over.
