SPECIAL FEATURES OF NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA:
The main attraction of Ngorongoro Conservation Area (8 292 km²or 3 205 miles²,) is the Ngorongoro crater (304 km² or 120 miles²), which is the world’s largest complete volcanic caldera. Inside the crater it is possible to see all the wild African animals living in the savanna.
In Ngorongoro Crater, you will have the best chance to see the most endangered African animal, rhino, since rhinos congregate in the crater more than in any other park in Tanzania. In addition to the rhinos, Ngorongoro crater hosts the highest density of predators such as lions, compared to areas of similar size around the world.
The conservation area was founded to protect the unique, volcanic environment and the traditional nomadic culture of Maasai tribes living in the area. Evidence of the world’s earliest inhabitants has also been found in this conservation area. The oldest known evidence of human beings in Tanzania is two sets of footprints at Laetoli, near Oldupai in Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
