Arusha National Park

SPECIAL FEATURES OF ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK:
  • Walking safaris
  • Rich birdlife
  • Black and white Guereza monkeys

National Park nearest to Arusha city is called Arusha National Park (137 km² or 53 miles²). It is the second smallest park in Tanzania.

The main attractions in Arusha National Park are the volcanoes, wildlife, highland forests and alkaline Momela Lakes. Mount Meru (4 566m) is the second highest peak in Tanzania after Mount Kilimanjaro, and the rare and endemic species living on the slopes of this isolated volcano give the main reasons to protect this area.

Because of it’s small size and piecefull wildlife Arusha National Park is perfect for one day walking safari. Along the lower slopes of Mt. Meru, paths to rivers and waterfalls make a relaxing day hike for visitors who really want to get out and enjoy nature. Walking also gives a different perspective on the wildlife.

While game viewing around the Momela Lakes, it is possible to observe the extremely rich bird life found there. Around 570 species of birds have been recorded in the park along with a wide variety of butterflies and numerous other wildlife, from giraffes to warthogs. Arusha is also the best place to see black and white Guereza monkeys.
