Elina Harju, Finland – Juvenile Jail

"Juvenile Jail is not as bad place as it might sound like. It’s closer to remand home than actual (adults’) jail and the kids are not some hard-core youth criminals, most have committed quite small crimes such as not going to school and stealing something etc. The work itself was mainly teaching and organizing games and such with the kids, and since the volunteers have free hands to plan what to do with the kids you can try many ideas. The language barrio and all the kids being in so different level at school (some can’t read while others are very good at school) causes challenges to teaching. In the morning you also never know how many kids there will be today, since they change a lot. All in all these three months were really great experience in every way."
