MARANGU CULTURAL TOURISM PROGRAM
Tanzanian Tourist Board (TTB) arranges Cultural Tourism Programs in 24 villages all around Tanzania. The aim of these programs is to introduce the traditional lifestyle of different tribes to the tourists and at the same time collect money for the development of the village. One of the TTB’s programs is situated in Marangu village.
We start the trip early in the morning. First we visit the traditional black smiths. You can see how they work and you can buy their products. After a short walk there are underground caves. Caves were used for hiding during the tribal war between Masais and Chaggas. The caves are so small that you have to crawl inside so be prepared with clothes which can get dirty.
After the caves you will visit a traditional Chagga hut where one grandma is living with three grandchildren. There are also cows living in the same hut. At the same time the guide will tell you about the traditional lifestyle of Chagga tribe. After this you will see how the traditional drink is made. Chagga tribe makes drink out of bananas by boiling them. This drink they drink in all important occasions and even in week days. You will see how they make the drink and in the end you can also taste it.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays you’ll have a chance to see a local market where they sell everything possible. After that we will drive up to the gorgeous Kinukamori waterfalls where you will eat a delicious lunch prepared by Chagga women. On the waterfalls it is also possible to swim so bring your swimming suit with you. All the way you can see amazing sceneries and when the weather is clear you can see the snow top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Before driving back home we still drive up to Marangu gate where people start their hiking up to the peak. The guide will tell you a lot of information about Mt. Kilimanjaro and about the climbing. You can also enjoy the stunning sceneries. You will see Moshi town down in the valley and if the weather is clear you can see all the way to Kenya. The trip takes a whole day. We will come back to the house around six o’clock in the evening.
A local guide will be with you the whole day. He knows the village very well and he will tell you a lot of information about the places you are visiting and also about the sceneries, flowers, people and everything that you see during the day.
