Holy Trinity nursery school was started in 2003. In the beginning they had 23 kids. This year the nursery school has 90 kids so it is very big and busy school. The kids’ age vary from 3 to 6. The nursery school has very severe lack of personnel since they only have 2 teachers. Both of them speak English. The teaching is given partly in English partly in Swahili. The teachers really need help since the classes are so big.
The kids arrive every morning between 7.30 and 8 am. The teaching starts at 8.30 am. 10.30 am all the kids get some porridge and at the moment they leave the school at 11am. If the teachers get some help they will extend the school day until 12 at noon.
Tanzanian nursery school is quite different from many western countries. It is more like a school. The smallest kids are still playing but especially the bigger ones are already studying alphabets, colors, greetings, body parts, times, days of the weeks, months and other skills needed at school. The kids usually wear a school uniform.
Interns will help the teachers with the teaching, feeding and keeping the kids clean. They can also do different games, plays and singing with the children.
The nursery school is very poor so all kind of donations are very welcome. You can bring e.g. pens, exercise books, rubbers, pen sharpeners, crayons, all kind of teaching material, kids games, all kind of educational material to teach the kids alphabets, colors, time, body parts and so on. All the donations are voluntary of course and it is not a condition for working in the nursery school.
