KIDS’ JAIL
The kids’ jail is our most important voluntary placement, but interns are also most welcome. There are about 20 kids who range from 10 to 17 years old. Most of the kids are from the streets although some of them do have a family. There are only a few girls; most inmates are boys. These children are put in the jail when police catch them committing small crimes. They are supposed to be held in the jail temporarily—while waiting for trial—but some of them have already been there for years.
If placed in the kids’ jail, you would be teaching the kids in the mornings. Some of the kids have never been in school and are illiterate, so you would be teaching them to read and write. Some children have completed some studies so for them, you would be teaching mathematics, English and other subjects. In the afternoons you can provide free-time activities for them, e.g. playing football, listening to music and dancing, playing different games or drawing.
When there are no volunteers at the jail, the kids are locked up in one room because of lack of local workers. This is why it is very important for us to try to send as many volunteers there as possible. Also, the jail doesn’t get enough funding from the government so they lack many things, e.g. clothes, soap and at times, even food. Therefore, all possible help and donations are more than welcome here.
Kids’ jail offers voluntary placements and also internships for those who study in the social sector.
