HURUMA HOSPITAL
Huruma hospital is the biggest of the three hospitals owned by diocese of Moshi. It is also partly owned by the district. It is situated in the slopes of Kilimanjaro at Ibukoni village, approximately 80 km from Moshi. Huruma hospital was founded in 1970. The hospital gets it’s funding from diocese of Moshi and also some support from government. It’s generally guite poor hospital. Huruma offers almost free health services fro its patients. There are patients coming from wide district, some of them very far, even from Kenya. In the hospital, there re over 200 employees, who are working in four shifts.
There are altogether 300 beds in the hospital and they are distributed in diferent wards as follows: Maternity 43 beds, Surgical/ Medical Ward 74 beds, Male/ Female Medical Ward 52 beds, Pediatric Ward 56 beds and Private Ward 23 beds. Beside these wards there is also a hostel called Vitus where pregnant women who are coming from far come before the due date to wait the delivery. The bed capacity of Vitus Hostel is 52 beds.
Inside the wards the patients are divided to different rooms. In the Maternity Ward there are own rooms for pre- mothers and normal deliveries and mothers who had cercaserian section. There is also room for premature babies, although it suffers from severe lack of equipments. In the Medical Ward all the patients suffering from malaria, HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis are in a separate room. In Pediatric Ward there is a different room for children who has some bur n injuries which are remarkable many in Tanzania. There is also an own building for sisters’ and fathers’ private rooms.
In Huruma Hospital there is also an Outpatient Ward which receives more than 100 patients every day. In addition to these wards there is also a separate infusion unit which prepres all the medical liquids used in drips. There is also computer room in the hospital which is used as an internet cafe and for searching information. There is also archive, laboratory, eye and dental units, x-ray, operating theatre and pharmacy. Also physiotherapy and mental healthcare are available in Huruma. The hospital also carries out different researches.
There is also a nursing school in the hospital area. There are approximately 200 students.
Huruma Hospital offers voluntary placements and internship placements for different helt care students eg nurses, pharmacists, gemeral doctors, pediatric doctors, eye doctors, dentists and dental nurses, x- ray doctors and nurses, midwifes, surgeons and physiotherapists.
Because of the hospitals remote location the volunteers and interns will stay in a hostel near the hospital. We arrange transportation to Moshi to the voluntary house for the weekends.
